The Three Motivations

Observations from Bennie Pollard

Motivation is one of those topics that sparks different opinions - some believe in it; others don’t give it much weight. For me, throughout my career, motivation has come in waves. Sometimes it’s loud and intense. Other times, it’s quiet and internal. I’ve come to see it as a series of seasons, each with its own purpose, power, and lesson.

Let’s dive into the three motivations that have shaped many people’s journey, including my own.

Motivation 1: Prove them Wrong

Early in my career, my driving force was clear: prove everyone wrong. “Ben, you’ll never amount to anything.” “You can’t open your own business.”

I heard it all. And my response was always the same: Watch me.

It was a powerful, fiery motivation - a spark that fueled long hours, big risks, and relentless hustle. Was it healthy? Maybe not. But it got me moving. And sometimes, that’s what matters most at the beginning. It was the fuel I needed to get off the ground.

Motivation 2: Prove it to Yourself

As time went on, the fire changed. The noise from others faded, and I began to hear a new voice - my own. This was a quieter, more personal motivation. No longer about proving others wrong, it became about proving something to myself.

I think back to the North American Hairstyling Awards – the NAHAs, as we call them - and how many times I was nominated without winning. It could’ve been easy to quit. But instead, I kept repeating: “I can do this. I can do this. I can do this.”

That mantra became my steady rhythm. Motivation 2: the silent driver. The one that doesn’t need an audience.

Motivation 3: Helping Others Find Their Song

Later in my journey, a new motivation emerged–and it’s the one that continues to guide me today. It’s no longer about me. It’s about helping others. Helping them find their voice, their rhythm, their path.

How can I use what I’ve learned to lift someone else up?

How can I play a small role in someone else’s success?

This third motivation is the most meaningful. Because when you help others find their way, you often end up finding more of your own.

Final Thought

We all move through different seasons of motivation. Sometimes we need to prove something. Sometimes we need to believe in ourselves. And sometimes, the most powerful drive comes from helping others shine.

Wherever you are in your journey– lean into the season you’re in. It’s all part of the path.

This third motivation is the most meaningful. Because when you help others find their way, you often end up finding more of your own.
