The Triple A: Awareness, Active, and Automatic

In the beauty industry, and in life, success often comes down to how we learn, practice, and eventually master the skills that define us. I like to call this process “The Triple A.” It’s a simple yet powerful framework that has guided me throughout my career and continues to make an impact every day.

STEP 1

AWARENESS

Awareness is the spark. It’s that moment when you notice a behavior, technique, or process you want to improve or add to your repertoire. Maybe it’s the way you phrase a consultation with a client, or the way you position your scissors before the first cut. At this stage, you’re consciously recognizing what you want to do differently. Awareness is about noticing, with intention, what matters.

STEP 2

ACTIVE

Once you’re aware, the next step is to act with purpose. Active means you’re deliberately thinking about how to execute. You pause before speaking, emphasize the right word, or adjust your hand position with intention during the hair service.

This is the stage of effort and focus, where every move is deliberate. In the salon, it might feel like slowing down to make sure every detail is correct. In conversation, it’s about carefully crafting your message.

STEP 3

AUTOMATIC

The final stage is freedom. Automatic is when the technique, behavior, or process becomes second nature. You don’t have to think about holding your scissors a certain way – you simply do it. You don’t have to consciously manage your tone in conversation – it’s become how you naturally communicate.

Automatic is mastery. It’s when practice transforms into instinct, and the skill becomes part of who you are.

WHY IT MATTERS

The Triple A is a professional framework; and a personal one too. It’s how raw awareness becomes polished expertise. It’s how we move from learning to leading, from effort to ease. The beauty of this process is that it works in every area of life – behind the chair, in business, and beyond.

I encourage you to explore the Triple A in your own career and personal growth. Think about where you’re becoming aware, where you’re actively practicing, and where you’ve already reached the point of automatic excellence. And most importantly – share your journey. Let us know how the Triple A is shaping your life and your business. After all, growth is even more powerful when it’s shared.
